Saunton Golf Club

36 Holes of Beautiful Championship Links Golf, set in the Heart of North Devon

Although it is believed that a course existed in Braunton Burrows in the early 1890s, Saunton Golf Club was not formed until May 1897. It was originally a 9-hole course, but was extended to 12 holes by 1906 and to 18 holes in 1908. A Clubhouse was built in 1907 at a cost of £1,000 and can still be seen as a private house to the right of the 16th fairway on the East Course.

Despite the proliferation of new courses nationwide, Saunton's two courses have stood up well to the competition. The East Course is ranked No. 95 in the Golf World 'Top 100 in the World' and No. 22 in the Golf World 'Top 100 Courses in England'. The West Course is No. 71 in the Golf World 'Top 100 Courses in England'.

Pusser's Rum

To prepare for a face off, the iron men in their wooden ships found both revival and salvation in Pusser’s Rum, as well as companionship for downtime reverie. From the earliest days of the Royal Navy, these foolhardy brave hearts were issued a daily ration or “tot” of rum by the ship’s “Purser,” a word the sailors later coined as “Pusser”. This rum tradition rewarded heroism and eased defeat from 1655 until 1970 when some of the higher-ups decided rum was having too much fun with the sailing men. Blame it on the above deck skirmishes or the below deck antics, or simply sea legs getting the better of the jolly Jack Tars. We like to think the Royal Navy just wanted to keep the sea’s best kept secret—and best tasting one—to themselves.

Thurlestone Golf Club

Situated in an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, Thurlestone is a fantastic location to play golf and tennis.
Running along the stunning coastline of Bigbury Bay, this Harry Colt designed course is a mix of links and cliff-top terrain with the latter providing breath-taking views of the legendary Thurlestone Rock to the East and the beautiful Avon Estuary and Burgh Island to the West.
The course is one of the most exhilarating with majestic rocky seascapes above the coves where smugglers used to operate. It is also ideal holiday golf - not too severe, with quite generous fairways but the wind, of course, can blow with a vengeance.

With its wide fairways and sweeping vistas the course looks deceptively simple but it offers a challenging test for the unwary golfer. Nature has provided its own hazards at Tavistock, with thick gorse and bracken, plus the odd clump of scrubby trees. There are also cunningly hidden bunkers that can trap the most proficient golfer. The thin soil not only provides tight lies, it also makes the greens lightning fast.
